Dr. Bert Waits

Dr. Bert K. Waits is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics from The Ohio State University. Dr. Waits is the cofounder and Director Emeritus of the Ohio Early College Mathematics Placement Testing (EMPT) Program, a program of the Ohio Board of Regents. He is also the cofounder of the internationally recognized Calculator and Computer Precalculus (C2PC) technology enhanced curriculum revision project and is the cofounder of the international T3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology) professional inservice teacher development program. The US K-12 T-cubed program is now operated from offices in Dallas, Texas and cosponsors hundreds of one week institutes for K-12 mathematics and science teachers nationwide each summer. Dr. Waits is also the cofounder of T3 Technology College Short Course (TCSC) Program for colleges and universities, operated from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Waits has been codirector or principal investigator of many NSF funded nationally recognized mathematics education projects. Waits has over seventy (70) publications in internationally recognized professional journals and has been a coauthor on three successful high school and college precalculus and calculus textbook series. Waits has assisted in the design of the Texas Instruments family of graphing calculators and hand-held computers since 1988. His focus is on mathematics teacher training supporting the appropriate use of hand-held technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Waits' current interest is in developing appropriate pedagogical approaches for the full integration of hand-held computer symbolic algebra in the teaching and learning of high school and college mathematics.

Dr. Waits has given many invited keynote lectures, workshops, and mini-courses at national meetings of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) throughout his career. He has also given many invited colloquia in mathematics departments and invited lectures at conferences throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. From 1986 to 1988 he served as a member of the grades 9-12 six person working group who authored NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. Waits also served on the College Board's AP Calculus Development Committee,1990-1992. Dr. Waits was elected to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Board of Directors 2000-2003.

Dr. Waits is the cofounder of the annual fall International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM), the annual Winter International Teachers Teaching with Technology (T3) Conference, and the biannual International European Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching (ICTMT)

Dr. Waits is a long time member of NCTM, MAA, and AMATYC. He is married to Barbara J. Waits and enjoys five children and fourteen grandchildren and currently lives in Florida.
